How Much Does It Cost to Run for Office?
It depends almost entirely on the level of the race. Local races, like city council or school board, typically run between $300 and $30,000. State legislative races range from $80,000 to over $300,000, especially in competitive districts or large states. Federal races are a different world, with House seats reaching into the millions and Senate races regularly hitting nine figures.
For most first-time candidates, the biggest local expenses are filing fees, yard signs, printed literature, and a basic website.
The candidate who spends the most does not always win. In low-turnout local races, a disciplined ground game and consistent voter contact will outperform a bigger budget more often than not.
