What Does a Campaign Manager Do?
A campaign manager plans the campaign, keeps the candidate organized, and brings the benefit of experience to every decision. The job is to make sure the right things happen at the right time, and that nothing falls through the cracks between now and election day.
There are two types. Some campaign managers are on the ground full-time, actively managing volunteers, coordinating events, and running day-to-day operations. That model works well for large, well-funded races with a lot of moving parts.
The other model is a strategic consultant: someone who sets the strategy, builds the plan, and advises the candidate throughout the race without being embedded in the campaign. For most local and state candidates, this is the smarter hire. You get the experience and the roadmap without the overhead of a full-time salary.
If you want to go deeper, the Art of Campaigns podcast covers campaign strategy in depth, and Ancient Wisdom for Modern Campaigns is the book version of everything I have learned running campaigns.
